Adult Study Old South Haven Church

Old South Haven Presbyterian Church
Brookhaven, NY

Hello All
I hope you will  consider coming to an Adult Study on Zoom  "Embracing An Adult Faith" based on a DVD by Marcus Borg.
There will be 5 sessions, on Thursday evenings starting this coming Thursday, March 4, at 7PM.

Each session will start with a video clip of the late Marcus Borg talking to a small group of participants about a given topic for the week;
Who is God?  Who was Jesus?  What is salvation?  How do we practice our faith? How do we live in community?
Then we will watch a few minutes of discussion with Borg's group, and then we'll take off on our own.

Borg was a well known theologian and a best selling author.  If you would like to supplement your Thursday nite study there are  many books by him available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.  The one I mentioned a few months ago is a series of essays on various topics, including the ones on the DVD:  Days of Awe and Wonder:  How to Be a Christian in the 21st Century.  But the sessions are meant to stand alone, so should be enriching  without the extra reading.

The zoom info will be the same for each week, and is below.  I set up 6 meetings but we will only use 5 of them.  The 5th session is the Thursday before Easter, so we can see later whether we want to skip that one and meet the following week.  If you let me know that you are coming (darcycorralstevens@gmail.com) I'll send a reminder on the Wednesday before.

Love and good health to all,
Darcy

This Week at Old South Haven Presbyterian Church

Old South Haven Presbyterian Church
Brookhaven, NY 11719

Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven Church,

I am writing this at 8:00 pm on Wednesday evening and thinking today was a lovely, warmish day and that Spring is on the way.  We are in the
season of Lent and that Easter will be coming.  And, the availability of vaccines is increasing.

So, maybe, getting back in the church for services may be in the near future.

But, we are still in the midst of the pandemic so our next Sunday's Church Service will again be by Zoom.  The details for joining this Sunday's service are below.
The Bulletin and Prayer Requests are attached and Pastor Glorya's sermon will be "What's in a Name?"

I look forward to seeing you on Zoom on Sunday!

Peace and Love,

Linda

February 9, 2021

Dear Friends,

We're a month and a half into the new year and some things that were new are growing on us.  Then there are some old things we wish would go away…..like the pandemic.  There is one thing however, for which I always look forward to each year, our denominational offerings.

So hard to believe that next week Lent begins and our first offering comes to the forefront, One Great Hour of Sharing.  This week I received, along with others within the presbytery, the following email from Melonie Roney, Mission Specialist in the Mission Agency in Louisville:

"Dear faithful friends,

As 2021 begins, we look back, in gratitude, for the ways the Church has been faithful to its calling despite the incredible challenges of 2020.  We pray that your congregation is well and looking forward to a hopeful and helpful year.
Your congregation has been essential to the compassionate ministries with those experiencing hunger, poverty, disaster, and oppression, through One Great Hour of Sharing, and our shared ministry with children youth and young adults through the Pentecost Offering.  While many congregations were unable to participate in 2020, your support this year will be a powerful witness to who we are, as a Church, in response to the grace of Jesus Christ."

Melonie discusses only two of our denomination offerings.  The others are Peace and Global Witness (the former Peace Offering) and Christmas Joy.  Each of these offerings are our witness to the world not only here but abroad and Old South Haven has made a commitment to all four of these offerings.  Look at the first page of the budget.

As I mentioned One Great Hour of Sharing will be upon us.  Contributions to OGHS go all over the world to combat hunger and poverty, fund Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and Self Development of People.  Usually, we give children little boxes to throw their change into and bring to church when we dedicate offerings.  This year why don't you set aside your loose change and when the time comes, count it out and write a check to be included in OSH's contribution to OGHS.  You have a month and you might be surprised!

 Pastor Glorya

Dorothy Hubert Jones died on the 9th of January 2021 in the Long Island Community Hospital of complications from COVID-19. Dorothy Post Hubert was born in 1918 in Brooklyn, a daughter of Philip Arthur Hubert and Helen Marion Post. Her family spent summers in Brookhaven. She was a graduate of Packer Collegiate Institute and Vassar College. She met her future husband, Curtis K. Jones, when he was a student assistant at the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn.
