Pentecost

Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven church,

I invite you to join us this coming Sunday, June 5, 2022, at 10:30 AM, for a live and Zoom Church Service.  It is Pentacost Sunday and it would be nice if everyone would wear red.
The Bulletin and List of Joys and Concerns, as well as a letter from Pastor Glorya, are attached.  Pastor Glorya's sermon is:  "A New Energy".  Communion will be celebrated.

I would like to thank all who helped make our Church Fair a success!

Dear Friends,
As I write this, I'm thinking I cannot believe it's June already! Where has the time gone? Do you ever feel that way? I remember once seeing a cartoon that said time is like a toilet paper roll. The older we get the faster the roll goes around.
So here we are again. Late spring early summer and it's Pentecost time again. Pentecost, when we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and refer to it as the church's birthday. If you're so inclined Acts 2:1-21 is the Scriptural reference for what happened to Peter and the disciples that day the Spirit came down and gave them a new energy. A new energy just might be the title of this week's sermon in fact.
We in the Presbyterian Church (USA) have four annual special offerings in which we collect funds for different emphases during the year. In the late Spring, early Summer, we collect the Pentecost Offering. The interesting thing about the Pentecost offering is that, like the Peace and Global Witness Offering collected in October, we're able to keep a percentage of the collected funds for local use. In the case of Pentecost we are able to keep 40% of the raised funds for the purpose of supporting youth programs in the Brookhaven area with 60% going to the Presbyterian Mission Agency again for youth..
The information we received this year outlined some of the programs that have benefited from these funds: 25% goes to Young Adult Volunteers "which trains and equips volunteers to engage in mission at 13 sites in the United States and around the world." It also assists with student loan debt (something we hear a great deal about), medical insurance, as well as providing funds for youth retreats, like the Youth Triennium; 25% supports ministries with youth ages 12-18 with programs from assisting graduating seniors in their exploration in faith, community, and vocation to creating downloads for youth ministry whether through curriculum or youth groups and daily digital devotions created strictly for youth; and finally 10% supports the "Educate a Child, Transform the World" initiative "affirmed by the 2014 General Assembly to motivate and inspire Presbyterians to better the lives of children" as they "advocate for public education that is equitable and accessible…so children may grow into the fullness of life."
I'll put a copy of the Leader's Guide" in the Gallery for your perusal if you so choose. It has Minutes for Mission, and other resource information.
"If we do a little, it adds up to a Lot!"

Shalom,
Glorya

Last Sunday, Pastor Emerita Jeanne Baum read a letter of thank you from Philip & Richard Altomare and Rachael (Philip's Fiance) for our contributions toward Helen's funeral expenses. "Between your generous contributions and those from friends and family, we were able to raise almost exactly how much we needed! … We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Feeling such love and support from the community for our mother from the community has truly lifted our spirits — to witness the tremendous and unexpected response brought tears to our eyes.…"
