Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven Church
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.  Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

This Sunday is Palm Sunday…a day of celebration…a day of rejoicing as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.  With the waving of palm branches it was a parade fit for a king….the King of Kings, our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.  Living some 2000 years after this event we are well aware that the rest of that week was not as joyous as that day.  In fact in many respects it was a disaster…a painful event not only for our Lord, but also for all his followers and friends.

We have come to the end of observing Lent with the joys of Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week.  It is time of prayer, a time of study and a time of reflection on the various events of a week that changed history. This includes Holy Thursday at which time we celebrate the Last Supper and then in the garden the shock of the arrest of Jesus.  Next is Good Friday with the trial and then the crucifixion.  These events brought fear into the lives of the followers of Jesus. The Good News of the week is the triumph of Easter Sunday. This event not only changed the religious world but ultimately governments and cultures of our people.

Today, as followers of Jesus we too, face pain and suffering and live with a spirit of fear…the fear of the Corona virus which encompasses our entire world. Like the ancient followers of Jesus we too however have the teachings and love of Jesus to overcome these spirits of fear.  With his love we can in our locked down mode reach out to bring peace and support to our neighbors and family members and to the world at large.

Therefore I encourage you to spend time this coming week to follow in the steps of Jesus as he walked through the events of Holy Week. We may not be able to leave our homes and come to church, but we can with the aid of modern communications walk the road of faith together.

I invite you to read in a daily manner the Gospel of Matthew beginning with chapter 21 and follow the events of Holy Week.  If you have more time, read portions of Matthew beginning with Chapter 5 which contains the Sermon on the Mount, and leads one through a number of chapters which deal with the teaching and miracles of Jesus.

For those who are able to come by the church we are placing a table out front by the entrance.  Upon the table will be palm fronds and some literature that may help you observe Palm Sunday.  We also suggest you assemble at home some bread and some beverage that can be shared with one another and in the tradition of Last Supper break the bread and drink the wine in the name of our Savior and Lord.  I, along with some elders of the church, will bless and break bread together at the church on Sunday morning. You can follow the service in the insert in this Sunday's bulletin.

Yes, it is a different world, but our faith will see us through this time of upheaval and fear.  Please reach out to one another by telephone to share the Christian Fellowship we are so used to enjoy.  Please feel free to contact me with your concerns and prayer requests.

Peace,

Pastor Ralph

 PEOPLE:  And also with you.
Leader:     Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the
things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit
set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
PEOPLE:  To set the mind on the flesh results in death, but to set
the mind on the Spirit results in life and peace.

spirit dwells in them and gives life to their mortal bodies.
PEOPLE:  The Spirit that God gives does not make us slaves or
                  cause us to fear.

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION AND CONFESSION
Eternal God, whose covenant with us is never broken, we confess that we fail to fulfill your will.  Though you have bound yourself to us, we will not bind ourselves to you.  In Jesus Christ you serve us freely, but we refuse your love and withhold ourselves from others.  We do not love you fully or love one another as you command.  In your mercy, forgive and cleanse us.  Give us strength to serve you faithfully until the promised day of resurrection, when, with the redeemed of all the ages, we will feast with you at your table in glory.  This we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
MOMENT OF SILENT CONFESSION

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader:     Who is in a position to condemn?  Only Christ, and Christ died for

PEOPLE:  And also with you. Amen.

* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH    "A Creed"  United Church of Canada
We are not alone, we live in God's world.
We believe in God: who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh,
       to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others by the Spirit.
   We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church,
       to celebrate God's presence,
to live with respect in creation,

to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,  our Judge and our Hope.

This week at Old South Haven Church

This Week at Old South Haven            March 27, 2020
Even when the congregation of a church is unable to meet, there are still bills to pay (utilities, insurance, telephone service, alarm monitoring, etc.).
As a regular giver, you may have wondered what options are available for making your contributions to Old South Haven other than by placing your donation in the collection plate during a Sunday worship service.
Here are two:
1. If you use your bank's "Bill Pay" feature, you may also use it to make your contribution to the church. When you use your financial institution's "Bill Pay" feature, your financial institution will mail a check to Old South Haven. To use this method, enter the payee as "Old South Haven Presbyterian Church." For the address, enter:
Assistant Financial Secretary
Old South Haven Presbyterian Church
P.O. Box 203
Brookhaven, NY 11719-0203
Your check will be delivered by USPS to the church's post office box, then retrieved and given to the Assistant Financial Secretary for recording and deposit.
2. If you don't use "Bill Pay," or don't want to, you may simply mail your check to the address shown in Method 1. To make it easier for you, an addressed envelope, with a stamp, is being mailed to all our regular donors.
Thank you!
Richard Thomas, Treasurer John Deitz, Financial Secretary

This week at Old South Haven Churdh

This Week at Old South Haven            January 2, 2020

Members and Friends of Old South Haven-
As this will be my final This Week bulletin to you, let me take just a moment to say that it has been an honor, privilege and a pleasure to serve with you over these last months. As in any relationship that matters, I have learned much from you and treasured many moments from time with the children of the church, to sitting at table with the Lunch Bunch and church potlucks, and most especially in our gathered worship. You have at times been an inspiration and at others frustrating but that is because we are all human and relationships take work to thrive. As I leave you know that I will carry you in my heart for you are now and always a part of my life's journey.
My hope for you as the journey of Old South Haven continues is that you will carry on being a light in the community. That you will stretch yourselves, take some risks, so that all will come to see that you are a community of faith with open hearts, open minds that is anchored in Christ's love for all.
In Christ,
Pastor Karen
