This week at Old South Haven Churdh

This Week                                        February 20, 2014

Lectionary Texts for Sunday, February 24th
    Genesis 45.3-15, Psalm 37.1-11, 39-40, 1 Corinthians 15.35-38 and Luke 6.27-38

Dear Members and Friends:

The lectionary reading from Genesis for this Sunday is Joseph's great reveal to his brothers. Famine has sent the brothers to Egypt in search of much needed food. Little did they know that the 'Egyptian' who could help them was the brother whom they sold into slavery years earlier. Like most family stories, it is a complicated one filled with favoritism, lies, bad (even evil acts), grief and more. Where is God in this family drama? Do you like anybody as the tale unfolds? To better appreciate the drama, I encourage you to read the whole story beginning at Genesis 37. Try reading it from different perspectives -Jacob, Joseph, the brothers, and last (but not least) God.
On other fronts, the Session held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday. Among the matters covered were the status of the ongoing repairs to the manse, approval of the 2019 budget, approval of a special offering to the work of the El Salvador task force of the Presbytery (more about that soon), and other regular reports. Many of you have asked about the repairs to the bell. At present the Property and Finance Committee is seeking a third estimate.
On March 3rd we will have our second Plumb Line/Potluck conversation. Our first conversation was lively and well attended. Please be sure to make time to be a part of this important conversation about the future of ministry and mission here at OSH.
Finally, the season of Lent is almost upon us. This year OSH is joining with other Bellport congregations for a Wednesday Lenten Series. The first will be an Ash Wednesday Service at Mary Immaculate Church on March 6th at 7:30 pm.
In Christ,
Pastor Karen

SAVE THE DATES: PLUMB LINE POTLUCK AND CONVERSATION: Sunday, March 3rd at 5 pm and Sunday, March 24th at 5 pm

Per Capita is – "the tie that binds" –annual support that unites the entire church in the ongoing and essential work that guides the Office of the General Assembly, the life of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and benefits every congregation and every mid-council ministry. Old South Haven remits the full per capita assessment. You can help free funds for other purposes here at Old South Haven by paying your individual per capita.
