A Message from Pastor Ralph Wright
April 30, 2020

Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven Presbyterian Church

Almost everyone knows that Jesus said "Love thy neighbor".  We happily accept this if we have good neighbors.  It's when we don't, that we look for exceptions to this commandment of our Lord.  The act of not loving our neighbors goes back for centuries.  It has not just been acts of individuals, it's been acts of families, of neighborhoods, of states, of nations, of the world itself.  Having had a few noisy and difficult neighbors, I can appreciate this response.  But knowing of the destructiveness of World Wars I can appreciate the basic truths of Jesus' statement "Love Thy Neighbor".  When we show the "love", our world is much better.

The present Covid-19 pandemic presents us with the same challenges of a world war.  This time the weapons are not guns and bullets, but medical science and social distancing which may include lockdowns at home and in the community.  As we all well know, not everyone is a happy camper.  Not only are there those who are going stir crazy, but there are those for various reasons are objecting to the lock downs and social distancing, even within the religious community of our nation.  When Protestant pastors and Roman Catholic priests are quoted to have stated in sermons, preached from their pulpits, that "obedience" is a word we have to respect one needs to take notice.  This is not purely obedience to the Lord, but to our medical and governmental leaders who are trying to save the lives of their citizens.  I can only add a "God Speed" to these officials.

We are also aware of the various vulnerable communities; senior citizen homes, people of color, those living in poverty, first responders and medical workers… the list goes on.  We as Christians have been challenged to answer the call of our Lord by reaching out to help all those in need.  We have responded through food banks, housing for the homeless, masks and PPEs for those on the front lines of the pandemic. And, yes, we need to continue to support these acts of being Good Samaritans.

In the midst of this worldwide health crisis, a pastoral letter was sent out by the leadership of the Presbyterian Church, USA, the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson II and the Rev. Dr. Dione Moffett, offering each one of us their prayers and support. They also encourage us to learn from one another and share ideas with one another, as well as with them.  They can be reached at www.connected@pcusa.org.

Also of note is the release from the Presbyterian Office of Public Witness, along with 70 other religious and non-governmental organizations of a request to our president and our government leaders during this world wide pandemic to ease the sanctions that have been previously imposed.  "We write to you out of deep concern for the health and well-being of ordinary people in Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, and other heavily-sanctioned locations. We also seek relief for people in Gaza, the West Bank, Yemen, and other countries being sanctioned by U.S. security partners and where U.S. laws and policies sanction non-state groups that control territory or political structures."

Signing this letter included the leadership of Church World Service, the National Council of Churches, the American Friends Service Committee, the United Methodist Church, the Disciples of Christ, the United Church of Christ, The Lutheran World Federation, the Episcopal Church, and the Mennonite Central Committee. The letter also said that the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the precarious position of many of these countries and territories and that without immediate aid they can face severe economic hardship, infection, and death.  It quoted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling "for the waiving of sanctions that can undermine countries' capacity to respond to the pandemic."

There is much we can do in the midst of this pandemic, including keeping in touch with those in our community that are hurting and alone, providing support for food banks and crisis centers, as well as the church.  And we can write letters to those who make our government function.  Let them know we "Love our Neighbors!"

Peace, and please share your concerns and prayer requests with me.

Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven Church

Say it Again!  Say it Again!  Say it Again!   Those were the words of a school drama coach.  I never thought I would begin a letter to church members with those words.  But repetition is not only good for the memory when learning lines for a play, it is also good for the soul.
"Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.  Little ones to him belong, they are weak but he is strong!"  These are the well written words, based on I Corinthians 6:19, of Anna Bartlett Warner who penned them in 1859.  The music was composed by William Batchelder Bradbury in 1862, who also added the chorus "Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so."  After publication as a song it became a most popular hymn in churches in America.  Christian missionaries also used it to proclaim the Gospel overseas. The hymn or chorus as some refer to it gained a worldwide following. It was particularly a favorite of children in Sunday School.

It is also interesting to note that in 1943 during the Pacific campaign of World War II in the Solomon Islands, John F. Kennedy's PT-109 was rammed and sunk. The Islanders who found Kennedy and survivors remember that when they rode on the PT boats to retrieve the survivors, the Marines sang the "Jesus Loves Me" chorus with the natives, who had leaned it from Seventh Day Adventist missionaries.
In today's world we tend to sing hymns that are more theologically compatible to modern society.  We are also led by Christian professors and Bible teachers to develop a Biblical understanding that highlights the complexities of the Christian faith.  The story of Jesus is interpreted to fit into a scientific world.  And yet, when thrown into a crisis, such as the Corona Virus Pandemic which we are experiencing today, it is the simple truths of the Gospel that gives us strength and a means to deal with our fears, our anxieties, and our loneliness.  Yes, Jesus loves us.

Today we are in the midst of the Season of Eastertide, a seven week season which ends with Pentecost.  Therefore it is appropriate that we continue in church and in our homes to celebrate Easter not just on Easter Sunday but for some time afterwards.  It is also appropriate to reflect on the events of Jesus' life.  It is noteworthy that Jesus had highs and lows.  He experienced in one moment God's powerful, life-changing love and the next moment was tempted not to trust God's love (Mark 1:9-13).  We too, are tempted that way.  The Biblical story of the woman accused of adultery points out her sins, yet puts forward the idea that we as Christians should not be condemning her by throwing stones at her but that we should protect her.  We are called to be stone catchers instead of stone throwers.  A revolutionary idea in a society of legalists.

There is so much fear and division in our nation and our world that we need to provide compassion and love to all, including those who disagree with us.  We can show compassion by giving help to all those in need.  We have neighbors and possibly family members who are angry because they are not able to work and earn money because of the virus and the mandates of the governmental authorities to keep us at home.  How we extend Jesus' love to help those who are suffering in such a way is a great challenge not only for us but for all in our community.  As Christians we need to lead the way in providing help while building bridges of trust and communities of love and respect.

In closing, let me also invite you to read this week-end the last chapter (#24) of the Gospel of Luke and follow the events of Easter and the days following.  .Please feel free to contact me with your concerns and prayer requests and don't forget, "Jesus loves you."

A Message from Pastor Ralph Wright

April 16, 2020

Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven Church

Streaming is the new fellowship of the Christian Church.  It is a new way of holding ourselves together in a time of a global pandemic.  It is also not the easiest high tech to understand.  This past Sunday we celebrated Easter.  We hailed the resurrection of Jesus with those familiar words, "He is Risen.  He is Risen Indeed!"  We celebrated with family, neighbors and church members.  But we didn't hug, high five, shake hands, or as we do in Europe kiss on each cheek.  But most important we were able to show love and extend hope to our circle of friends and family.

Hope.   That's is the message for a world in crisis.  That is the message of Easter.  That is the message Jesus wants us to continue to share with all of those around us.  Our present week leads up to the 2nd Sunday of Easter.  Because so many folks are exhausted after celebrating Easter, the following Sunday has a lower church attendance and therefore is often referred to as "Low Sunday".  Statistically this may be right, but theologically and historically this is incorrect.  Because the week between Easter and the following Sunday, as proclaimed in the scriptures, was a time which truly changed the attitude and feelings of the disciples who entered the week as scared and afraid followers to confident and loving apostles.  This is the week of the beginnings of the Christian Church.

It is easy to equate the word church with institutions.  The word church or kirk has its roots in the Anglo/Germanic word "die Kirche" which can imply a structure.  The French and its Latin/Greek roots refer to church not as a building but as a faith.  The French word is l' église which has its roots in the Greek word ecclesia which traditionally means "called out".  Christians are called out to share their faith, their hope, their love, their good deeds with the world around them.

In the middle of a corona virus pandemic it is easy, because of lock down rules, to stay at home and not interact with the world.  To allow friends and neighbors to be scared and yes, even angry about not being able to do what they usually did, working, socializing, relaxing, travelling, etc.  But from the scriptures we are enjoined to reach out, support, love, console, and assist all our family and friends in this time of need.  Whether we do it as first responders, hospital workers, essential employees, or as individuals working and living at home, we also have the call of St. Paul the Apostle, to go into the world, preaching, teaching and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Fortunately, in our new age we have the internet.  Martin Luther was able to get out this message because of the invention of the printing press.  We are able to get the word out today with help of the internet and streaming.  No longer are we confined to our village or town…. the world is now open to us all.  And likewise, we are open to the world. Hopefully the tools that we have learned to use, during this pandemic, will continue to be used when we return to more normal times.  The message of Hope of Jesus needs to be proclaimed through both word and deed and we now have this new tool.  Let us affirm that we will continue to improve our use of the internet so we can share Hope with the world in which we live.

Peace, and please share your concerns and prayer requests with me.

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  On this Easter Sunday let the King of grace and glory enter into our lives, and give us the strength to recognize our weaknesses and our strengths so that we may overcome the world with the wisdom of faith.
O almighty God, who alone can order the unruly wills and affections of sinful people:  grant unto us your people, the love of this world in the way that you would command.   Let our heart be surely fixed to those acts and deeds where true joys are to be found.   We also acknowledge and confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed;  That we have not loved you and your creations with all our heart and soul, with all our mind and strength; And that we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.   Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and grant us your peace all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Letter from Rev Ralph Wright
April 9, 2020
Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven Church
As one reads this letter we are approaching the end of Holy Week.  The events of Palm Sunday and the victorious entry of Jesus riding on a donkey into Jerusalem is behind us.  We are now focusing in on the events of Holy Thursday, the commemoration of the Last Supper in which Jesus transformed the Passover meal into a new rite namely that of Holy Communion.  The Bread and the wine became the center piece of our Christian faith, namely the Sacrament of the Eucharist.  This is my body broken for you, take eat, do this in remembrance of me….this is the blood of the new covenant, drink ye all of it.
Following the meal in the Upper Room, Jesus and the disciples went up to the Mount of Olives to pray, and then our Lord was arrested and taken away to jail.  An event which struck fear into all the disciples.  The next day he was tried and found guilty by the Sanhedrin, brought before Pontius Pilate who then condemned him to death on the cross.  After three hours on the cross he died, was taken down and placed in the tomb provided by Joseph of Arimethea.
On the third day we hear these words, "He Is Risen. He is Risen Indeed!"  Easter Sunday…a great day of celebration…the day of resurrection.  The day of the empty tomb.   The most holy of holy days of the church year.  Though the disciples at first were skeptical, they then became great believers, shouting out "We have seen the Lord!" From that time on the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ spread around the world transforming the way we pray, the way we think and the way we believe. Down through the centuries we have celebrated the Resurrection of our Lord.
The public celebrations of Easter have evolved and become a major part of our life.  This year however we are stopped short by the Corona Virus.  Churches are closed and we have stay at home and distancing rules.  If we look back in history we can see that this is not the first time Easter celebrations have been cancelled.  Plagues have been apart of our history, not only in Biblical times but also through the past 2,000 years.
In 1633 the Bavarian village of Oberammergau, Germany ravaged by a pandemic made a pledge to God.  One in four people are believed to have died.  Whole families were gone.  Then villagers stood before a cross and pledge to God that if he spared those who remained, they would perform the Passion Play – enacting Jesus' life, death and resurrection – every 10th year forever after.   For nearly four centuries, with a cast of over 1,000 villagers, the people of Oberammergau kept their promise. With the exception of two wars, they celebrated their salvation from one pandemic – until another pandemic forced them to break it this year...the Corona Virus.  This year's summer presentations in the 4,500 seat open air theater will take place in 2022.
Already, the Corona Virus has given new significance to the words Frederik May, who was to play Jesus, had been rehearsing.  When Jesus addresses the people of Jerusalem, he talks about how "poverty and disease
are carrying you off." In two years, when the pandemic has taken its toll and the Passion Play is resurrected, Mr. Mayer said, "that sentence will have a whole different meaning."
We too look at life a lot differently today than a couple of months ago, I again encourage you to spend time to follow in the steps of Jesus as he walked through the events of Holy Week. We may not be able to leave our homes and come to church, but we can with the aid of modern communications walk the road of faith together.
I invite you again to read in a daily manner the Gospel of Matthew beginning with chapter 21 and follow the events of Holy Week.  I also invite you this Sunday at 10 a.m. to be with us via the internet. You can follow the service in this Sunday's bulletin. Our faith will see us through this time of upheaval and fear.  Please reach out to one another by telephone to share the Christian Fellowship we are so used to enjoy.  Please feel free to contact me with your concerns and prayer requests.
Peace,
Pastor Ralph

From Pastor Ralph

April 2, 2020

Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven Church
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.  Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

This Sunday is Palm Sunday…a day of celebration…a day of rejoicing as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.  With the waving of palm branches it was a parade fit for a king….the King of Kings, our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.  Living some 2000 years after this event we are well aware that the rest of that week was not as joyous as that day.  In fact in many respects it was a disaster…a painful event not only for our Lord, but also for all his followers and friends.

We have come to the end of observing Lent with the joys of Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week.  It is time of prayer, a time of study and a time of reflection on the various events of a week that changed history. This includes Holy Thursday at which time we celebrate the Last Supper and then in the garden the shock of the arrest of Jesus.  Next is Good Friday with the trial and then the crucifixion.  These events brought fear into the lives of the followers of Jesus. The Good News of the week is the triumph of Easter Sunday. This event not only changed the religious world but ultimately governments and cultures of our people.

Today, as followers of Jesus we too, face pain and suffering and live with a spirit of fear…the fear of the Corona virus which encompasses our entire world. Like the ancient followers of Jesus we too however have the teachings and love of Jesus to overcome these spirits of fear.  With his love we can in our locked down mode reach out to bring peace and support to our neighbors and family members and to the world at large.

Therefore I encourage you to spend time this coming week to follow in the steps of Jesus as he walked through the events of Holy Week. We may not be able to leave our homes and come to church, but we can with the aid of modern communications walk the road of faith together.

I invite you to read in a daily manner the Gospel of Matthew beginning with chapter 21 and follow the events of Holy Week.  If you have more time, read portions of Matthew beginning with Chapter 5 which contains the Sermon on the Mount, and leads one through a number of chapters which deal with the teaching and miracles of Jesus.

For those who are able to come by the church we are placing a table out front by the entrance.  Upon the table will be palm fronds and some literature that may help you observe Palm Sunday.  We also suggest you assemble at home some bread and some beverage that can be shared with one another and in the tradition of Last Supper break the bread and drink the wine in the name of our Savior and Lord.  I, along with some elders of the church, will bless and break bread together at the church on Sunday morning. You can follow the service in the insert in this Sunday's bulletin.

Yes, it is a different world, but our faith will see us through this time of upheaval and fear.  Please reach out to one another by telephone to share the Christian Fellowship we are so used to enjoy.  Please feel free to contact me with your concerns and prayer requests.

Peace,

Pastor Ralph
