James Howell Post Memorial Chandelier Work Completed

Subject: James Howell Post Memorial Chandelier Work Completed

Hi,

Thank you to Ken Asselta, Kappy Tilney, Judi Bird, and Deborah Mayo for work on lowering and raising the chandelier, cleaning it, and replacing the bulbs.

The chandelier has three tiers, with 5 bulbs in the top tier, 10 in the middle tier, and 20 in the bottom tier.

Twelve of the 35 bulbs were no longer turning on.

Here are “Before” and “After” photos:

                                                Before, 29 Nov 2021, 10 am

                                                After, 29 Nov 2021, 1 pm

Ken, Lowering the Chandelier, being careful that the

crank doesn’t slip out of his hand,

(and that he doesn’t fall through the ceiling).

                   Judi, Watching the Chandelier Descend

and making sure the support is

properly positioned for the chandelier to make

                                       a safe landing.

                     Kappy watched the other side.

(I don’t know why the circular opening in the ceiling is huge—only the small center part of the chandelier has to go through the ceiling—but it does give people in the attic a better view. I think there was a recessed light fixture in the center that was replaced by the opening for the chandelier in 1961.)

Deborah, Kappy, and Judi Dusting Off the Chandelier

After getting the chandelier down, the bulbs were removed and tested, and replaced if no longer working, and the “glass shades” were all cleaned.

Finally, All Thirty-Five Bulbs Are Working—now to get the glass shades back on.

Then began the long procedure of getting each of the 35 glass shades, 35 cylindrical socket covers, and 35 bulbs all back in place in a way that didn’t make a bulb stop working.

(It’s harder than it looks. If the thick-cardboard socket cover can’t be pushed down to the bottom of the glass shade, the bulb can’t be firmly seated in its socket---and the diameters of some of the socket covers made them a very tight fit inside the base of the glass shades. It took a lot of pushing and wiggling, which, unfortunately, resulted in fingerprints all over the newly cleaned glass shades.)

After that, it was back up to the attic again, where Ken did a lot more cranking to get the chandelier back up to the ceiling.

I slid in the bar through the eye on the chandelier and plugged it back in. Then, except for getting ourselves back down out of the attic, we were nearly done.

Bar through Eye of Chandelier to Hold It Up

(even if the steel cable is released or breaks)

This Week at Old South Haven Presbyterian Church

Old South Haven Presbyterian Church
November 28,2021 - 10:30 a.m.
First Sunday of Advent

Dear Members and Friends of Old South Haven Church,

I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving and are now preparing for the Christmas Season.

Please join us this coming Sunday, November 28, 2021, at 10:30 AM, for our live and Zoom
church service.  The details for joining the Zoom service are below.

Please see the attached Bulletin*, List of Joys and Concerns and Pastor Glorya,s Advent Letter.

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Love.

Linda

Today, we will be receiving your Pledge/Anticipated Giving Cards. Letters
were sent out this past week. If you did not receive one, blanks have
been placed in the Narthex near the collection plate.

Readers needed for Advent wreath on Dec. 12th and 19th. Speak to Pastor Glorya if your family or you and a friend would like to participate.

Devotions for Advent published by the Presbyterian Outlook: usually I email these out weekly to people but the craziness of going from PDF to Word or Word to PDF just slows me down. Therefore, if one isn't in your bulletin, look for it out in the Narthex. The readings begin each Sunday.

* Attached Bulletins: One of the attached PDF files of the bulletin is meant for reading on a display rather than being printed out. (Each hymn appears near where it is sung, so you don't have to scroll down.)
The other PDF file of the bulletin is for printing as a booklet—by printing the two sheets on both sides, flipping on the short edge, then folding them to make a booklet. -- Richard

Dear Friends,
I don't know how to say this any other way…..let the roller coaster ride begin.
Sometimes I think our lives during Advent go up and down like a roller coaster or like the weather. We keep getting overwhelmed by the events and activities of the secular season. A party here and there. Shopping at the nearest toy store or mall/shopping center. It's so interesting that our liturgical season of Advent, our season marked by waiting, is accompanied by a frenzy of busyness. Our cultural events and expectations invade our lives and cause us to trip over our church rituals tempting us to forget that we Christians are, in fact, preparing for Jesus' birth and Christ's return. We just plain lose sight of the holy in our midst forgetting what the season is supposed to entail.
Jill Duffield, former Editor of the Presbyterian Outlook, last year wrote something that caused me to pause. She wrote, "Imagine if disciples of Jesus Christ entered Advent with a hope and anticipation of seeing the divine at work all around and within us. Imagine if Christians took Advent as an invitation to slow down, rather than speed up, to ponder instead of purchase, to look for God in all things even as we wait for the Word made flesh to appear." I too raise my hand and plead guilty and also promise to try to slow down.
As I wrote in the announcement page this week, each year I've emailed out weekly Advent Devotions from the Presbyterian Outlook. Perhaps I'll get more techie savvy later but for the time being the devotions will either be in your bulletin or in the Narthex. Each new devotional week begins on Sunday. Now if you who are Zoomers want to assist me in converting PDF to Word or Word to PDF, I have open ears!! I will be trying to get these out to you too.
In the meantime, may this Advent season be one where your anticipation of Jesus' birth and your expectation of Christ's return allow you to see God all around you and in all times.
Shalom,
Glorya
