This week at Old South Haven Churdh

February 28, 2019

Dear Members and Friends:

Sunday evening,we will gather for our second potluck and plumb line conversation. Our first conversation was well attended and we had a lively conversation. Each conversation and your participation in it matters, as it is from these conversations that a picture of OSH its hopes, dreams for a vibrant future as a community of faith will emerge. Every voice is important.

As you know I work with numerous churches in the Presbytery of Long Island as they too develop their own Plumb Lines at points of transition in their lives. I'd like to share with you a quote that was used in a Plumb Line Report by a sister congregation>

"By what do we measure our lives and our community? What tells us that things are aligned, that life is where it needs to be?'' He continues by telling us
that "God's plumb line has a lot to do with the poor. It has a lot to do with righteousness that is living in right relationship with God and neighbor. It has
a lot to do with justice." --Rev. Joseph J. Clifford

Take some time to ponder his words and come be a part of the conversation Sunday at 5 pm.

In Christ,

Pastor Karen

Our second Plumb Line Conversation and Potluck is tonight at 5 pm. The Deacons are providing the main course and ask you to bring vegetable/salad or desert for the side dishes. The Plumb Line conversation is a critical piece for moving forward into the future here at OSH. Please make it your priority for this evening.

SAVE THE DATES: The final PLUMB LINE POTLUCK AND CONVERSATION will be on Sunday, March 24th at 5 pm.

The Season of Lent Begins Wednesday with our joint Ash Wednesday service at 7:30 pm at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church (16 Browns Lane, Bellport). For other Lenten services and resources see this week's bulletin insert.

This week at Old South Haven Churdh

This Week                                        February 20, 2014

Lectionary Texts for Sunday, February 24th
    Genesis 45.3-15, Psalm 37.1-11, 39-40, 1 Corinthians 15.35-38 and Luke 6.27-38

Dear Members and Friends:

The lectionary reading from Genesis for this Sunday is Joseph's great reveal to his brothers. Famine has sent the brothers to Egypt in search of much needed food. Little did they know that the 'Egyptian' who could help them was the brother whom they sold into slavery years earlier. Like most family stories, it is a complicated one filled with favoritism, lies, bad (even evil acts), grief and more. Where is God in this family drama? Do you like anybody as the tale unfolds? To better appreciate the drama, I encourage you to read the whole story beginning at Genesis 37. Try reading it from different perspectives -Jacob, Joseph, the brothers, and last (but not least) God.
On other fronts, the Session held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday. Among the matters covered were the status of the ongoing repairs to the manse, approval of the 2019 budget, approval of a special offering to the work of the El Salvador task force of the Presbytery (more about that soon), and other regular reports. Many of you have asked about the repairs to the bell. At present the Property and Finance Committee is seeking a third estimate.
On March 3rd we will have our second Plumb Line/Potluck conversation. Our first conversation was lively and well attended. Please be sure to make time to be a part of this important conversation about the future of ministry and mission here at OSH.
Finally, the season of Lent is almost upon us. This year OSH is joining with other Bellport congregations for a Wednesday Lenten Series. The first will be an Ash Wednesday Service at Mary Immaculate Church on March 6th at 7:30 pm.
In Christ,
Pastor Karen

This week at Old South Haven Churdh

February 14, 2019\

Dear Members and Friends-

First it is good to be back. I had a good study leave with a chance to do some reading, reflection and relaxation.
Today is Valentine's Day. I have to admit that it is not a day I give that much thought to as a general rule. But as I looked at this week's scripture, I realized that I do think a lot about love. Just not the kind of love that brings on candy, roses, and candlelight dinners. When I think about love it is about God's enduring love for us that is steadfast in spite of all the ways in which we fail to love ourselves, our neighbors, strangers and even enemies. I think about a God that loved us so much that he sent signs, prophets and even his Son to show us how to love.
But in particular, as Paul reflects in our text (1 Corinthians 15.12-20), I think about a God who wants us to live. A God who can pick us up when we are broken and put us back together to live anew. A God for whom death was not an obstacle but an opening to show us what life really looks like. That is what resurrection is really about.
In case you are wondering how we got from Valentine's Day to Easter in a single step. I do know that the beginning of Lent is still a few weeks off and Easter further yet. But resurrection isn't a reality (or story, depends on where you stand) for a single day. It is about faith day in and day out. As we come to this Sunday's service, I invite each of you to reflect on how you see resurrection, what questions and doubts do you have? What grabs you and excites you when you hear, He is risen?
See you Sunday,
Pastor Karen
