                             HAPPY THANKSGIVING

I cherish Thanksgiving because of its emphasis on expressing gratitude. (Yes, I know that for many it is day to overstuff yourself on all that food prepared for this particular celebration, but most dinners begin with a prayer of thanks).  From the very beginning of its observance (and there was no abundance of food then) it has been marked by an acknowledgment of our dependence on God Almighty, the good earth, and other people. For many it is the opportunity to gather with family and friends and grateful for their presence in our lives. C.S. Lewis observed that grateful people are emotionally healthy people. I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Note: Presbyterian Churches in our area (Yaphank, Middle Island, Center  Moriches, East Moriches and Remsenburg) are joining together to address losses locally due to Hurricane Sandy and the Northeaster. We will be operating through the food pantry at the Presbyterian Church of the Moriches. Our Board of Deacons met after worship this past Sunday and voted to send immediately $500 from our Deacons Fund to assist in this endeavor. In addition we will collect food supplies and other items to restock the pantry. We are thankful to those who regularly give to our Deacons Fund which makes this possible.

The election is over and despite the continuing sharp division in our country hopefully all will pull together to address the challenges that lie before us.

Another storm is on the way and we trust it will not result in the same devastation many parts of the Island have experienced.

I want to thank Linda Majowka and Sean Moran for  driving me to Patchogue for the visitation and funeral for Bill Scott. I still have not been able to get gas for my car!

Re: Church work groups

Work groups from your churches may also register with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance at: pda.callcenter@pcusa.org

Importance guidance for regional long term recovery:

Remind folks in your congregation and community to register with FEMA if they sustained damage to homes or businesses. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will help those who sustained damage during Sandy with grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. To apply for disaster assistance, you can register on-line at FEMA’s web site (www.disasterassistance.gov) or call 1-800-621-FEMA from 7 am to 10 pm, seven days a week.

It is important to note that the cumulative regional damage registered with FEMA will also impact the amount of aid that will later come into the region for future infrastructure repair and restoration.

Presbytery Reconstruction Fund

The Presbytery is establishing a special Long Island Hurricane Sandy Reconstruction Fund to receive financial gifts that will be used in the future for local unmet needs after initial funding has been received from other agencies. Checks should be made payable to “The Presbytery of Long Island” and marked “Hurricane Reconstruction Fund” on the memo line.

[news] FW: Notice to Congregation

 NOTICE
It is with a heavy heart that I bring you news of the death of Bill Scott earlier today. Linda had been in touch with me yesterday and this morning indicating that Bill had been taken to the Emergency Room at Brookhaven Hospital. I had planned to visit him at 1pm today. She called again at 11:30am to tell me he was on life support. I drove immediately to the hospital but he died before I arrived. I sought to bring comfort to Linda and their two children.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Further information will be forwarded to our e mail list when they are available.
It is All Saints Day and Bill was and is a saint in the church of Jesus Christ and a dear friend. Please keep Linda and the family in your prayers,
