Old South Haven Presbyterian Church of Brookhaven will offer a program titled “Welcoming Transgender People” on Sunday, June 2, at 4:00pm in the Carriage House at the Church, located on Beaver Dam Road and South Country Road, across from the Bellport High School. The speaker will be Juli Grey-Owens.
Juli Grey-Owens is a Long Island and New York State Transgender Community Advocate. Grey-Owens is a Board Member of the Empire State Pride Agenda; the New York State LGBT Advocacy Organization; Chair of the GLBT Democrats of Long Island; and a member of the Suffolk County Democratic Party Executive Committee.
Grey-Owens speaks regularly at churches and public forums about the need for statewide Transgender Civil Rights. She lives in Huntington with her wife Barbara.
In announcing this program The Rev. Thomas J. Philipp, Pastor of the Church,, said, ”There has been much progress made in society and in the Church to welcome Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual persons into acceptance and participation in the life of our institutions. The same cannot be said for Transgender individuals. Our Session offers this program as an educational event to better understand those whose identity or behavior falls outside stereotypical gender expectations.”
The program will include examples of discrimination and also discuss pending legislation known as GENDA (Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act) presently before the New York State Legislature.
There will be a time of fellowship and refreshment following the presentation. All are welcome.
